Taming the River: Negotiating the Academic, Financial, and Social Currents in Selective Colleges and Universities.Camille Z. Charles, Mary J. Fischer, Margarita A. Mooney & Douglas S. Massey - 2009 - Princeton University Press.
Building on their important findings in The Source of the River, the authors now probe even more deeply into minority underachievement at the college level. Taming the River examines the academic and social dynamics of different ethnic groups during the first two years of college. Focusing on racial differences in academic performance, the book identifies the causes of students' divergent grades and levels of personal satisfaction with their institutions. Using survey data collected from twenty-eight selective colleges and universities, Taming the (...)

(1 other version)Applying a principle of explicability to AI research in Africa: should we do it?Mary Carman & Benjamin Rosman - 2020 - Ethics and Information Technology 23 (2):107-117.
Developing and implementing artificial intelligence (AI) systems in an ethical manner faces several challenges specific to the kind of technology at hand, including ensuring that decision-making systems making use of machine learning are just, fair, and intelligible, and are aligned with our human values. Given that values vary across cultures, an additional ethical challenge is to ensure that these AI systems are not developed according to some unquestioned but questionable assumption of universal norms but are in fact compatible with the (...)

Just Words: On Speech and Hidden Harm: An Overview and an Application.Mary Kate McGowan - 2021 - Australasian Philosophical Review 5 (2):129-149.
ABSTRACT This paper argues for a hidden way in which speech constitutes harm by enacting harmful norms. The paper then explores the potential legal consequences of uncovering such instances of harm constitution. In particular, the paper argues that some public racist speech constitutes harm and is thus harmful enough to warrant legal remedy. Such utterances are actionable, it is contended, because they enact discriminatory norms in public spaces.

Damage compounded: Disparities, distrust, and disparate impact in end-of-life conflict resolution policies.Mary Ellen Wojtasiewicz - 2006 - American Journal of Bioethics 6 (5):8 – 12.
For a little more than a decade, professional organizations and healthcare institutions have attempted to develop guidelines and policies to deal with seemingly intractable conflicts that arise between clinicians and patients (or their proxies) over appropriate use of aggressive life-sustaining therapies in the face of low expectations of medical benefit. This article suggests that, although such efforts at conflict resolution are commendable on many levels, inadequate attention has been given to their potential negative effects upon particular groups of patients/proxies. Based (...)

In the Philippines, all transplant centers are mandated by the Department of Health (DOH) to have a Hospital Transplant Ethics Committee (HTEC) to ensure that donations are altruistic, voluntary and free of coercion/commercial transactions. This study was undertaken primarily to describe the organizational and functional profile of existing HTECs and identify areas for improvement. This is a descriptive cross‐sectional study. There was variation in their logistical arrangements (support from hospital, filing systems, office spaces), operations (length and frequency of meetings, number (...)

    Michigan's Heritage Barns.Mary Keithan - 1999 - Michigan State University Press.
Photographer Keithan captures on film the rural landscape's aging and historic barns. But rather than a sad chronicle of America's rural decline, she presents a visual story of endurance and perseverance, of a way of life that continues to thrive. The b&w photographs from each of Michigan's 80 counties are enriched by her narrative, often including histories from the barn owners themselves.

    Ethics of Ancestral Explanation.Mary Beth Mader - 2015 - Eco-Ethica 4:137-150.
Human beings experience themselves through various kinds of collectively experienced time. Medicine that relies upon precarious forms of ancestral or evolutionary explanation generates such collectively experienced forms of time, which are thus essentially politico-medically instituted versions of kin relations. Kin relations structure our ethical relations to each other rather thoroughly, even in Western modernity, especially through legally sanctioned relations. Hence, an ancestral or evolutionary explanation in medicine should be examined for its ethical import via its structuring of etiologically linked kin (...)

Secrets hidden by two-dimensionality: The economy as a hydraulic machine.Mary S. Morgan & Marcel J. Boumans - unknown
A long-standing tradition presents economic activity in terms of the flow of fluids. This metaphor lies behind a small but influential practice of hydraulic modelling in economics. Yet turning the metaphor into a three-dimensional hydraulic model of the economic system entails making numerous and detailed commitments about the analogy between hydraulics and the economy. The most famous 3-D model in economics is probably the Phillips machine, the central object of this paper.

    Inorganic Compounds and Teleological Explanation in Aristotle’s Meteorology 4.12.Mary Katrina Krizan - 2024 - Phronesis 70 (1):1-47.
Aristotle’s Meteorology 4.12 is puzzling, in part because the chapter appears to extend teleological explanation to include certain inorganic materials without natural biological functions, such as metals and stone. This paper examines two attempts to explain why such materials can have functions, and shows that they are problematic. As an alternative, I argue that raw inorganic materials—as well as separated parts of organisms—can have extrinsic functions. Extrinsic functions can explain why natural inorganic materials can be sorted into natural kinds, even (...)
